Apple Pie Energy Bars
There is a saying I find very amusing. Apples did not exist in America until they were introduced to the new land by Dutch and English colonists. Along with their apple and other fruit trees, they also brought recipes for richly-filled pies that were passed on from generation to generation and soon became part of American food culture. And although, it was probably the English who we can thank for making the first apple pies the earliest recipe was found in an English cookbook dated , it is actually the Dutch, in my opinion, who are worthy of the aforementioned phrase.
It was served with a very strong cup of coffee, and it was the first of many more apple pie experiences to come. It can be served with mid-morning coffee or afternoon tea, it does exceptionally well as pastry of choice at birthday parties and all other kinds of celebratory gatherings and family reunions, and it can be found on the menu of almost every restaurant in the country.
This grainless porridge relies on sweet and tart Honeycrisp apples to make a chunky sauce enriched with coconut milk, cashews and ground flaxseed.
Humans have always craved sweet things. Early on, it was all berries and honey , but with the introduction of refined sugar, the dessert was born. The name dessert comes from the French word “desservir” which means “to clear away” — in this case, the dinner table. Depending on where you are in the world, you’ll get a wide variety of the post-meal sweet treats. In China, it might contain red beans or dates. In Mexico, the custard like flan could be on the menu.
In the United States, the sweeter the dessert is, the better. We may not have invented all or even most of the desserts we’re known for, but we’ve certainly put our own spin on a wide variety of foreign classics — so much so that some of the most popular desserts have become synonymous with the United States. Just the words “apple pie” conjure up visions of white picket fences and baseball.

Tip all the ingredients, into a preserving pan. Warm over a low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves. Turn up the heat a little, then let the mixture boil until the Bramley apples have broken down to a pulp, but the eating apples still hold their shape. Stir occasionally to stop the chutney from sticking. This can take from 45 mins to 1 hr. You can tell that it is ready by running your wooden spoon through the mixture.
Whilst the chutney cooks, sterilise your jars see tip, below. When the chutney is ready, pot the mixture into the jars. Can be eaten within a few days, but is best left for a few weeks to mellow and mature. Will keep for at least a year. Transfer to the oven and leave until completely dry.

Apples are a seriously underrepresented ingredient here on 1IC. Each cupcake-sized pie is made with a whole wheat crust stuffed with a mixture of minced apples and a delicious date-based caramel sauce, all baked until golden brown and delicious. My house in York, by happy coincidence, also has an apple tree in the garden, but this time it is entirely mine and entirely my lawn that bears the brunt of the October windfall. Inevitably, some will. They will be too badly bruised to use, a tell-tale russet blotch on their side hinting at the mangled, mushy flesh within. Or they will be peppered with too many worm holes to make it worth trying to cut them out.
Last weekend, though, I decided to mow the lawn, which involved rounding up all the windfall apples and raking them into the flowerbeds. However, the length of the grass had provided a handy natural cushion for the fruit, meaning that about seventy per cent of the apples were still intact.

Our Hot Apple Pie Fragrance Oil has been specially formulated to evoke the familiar and well-loved smell associated with a home made apple pie, exuding a strong and prominent smell associated with apple, lemon and whipped cream. This initial aroma is the most pronounced as your candle starts to burn, filling up your room with a scent that is then enhanced by light undertones of cinnamon, clove and anise.
Incorporated into the formulation for this distinctive fragrance is a delightful trace aftertaste of vanilla buttercream, pie crust and nutmeg. All our fragrance oils are exclusive to Cosy Owl and have been developed by our experts for superior scent throw in a candle and have been optimised to use with our wax. All our fragrances are high quality and specifically designed for excellent scent throw, meaning that generally speaking less is more.
How much to add is slightly complex and we have developed a guide to give you more details here. It is always best to experiment with each scent and wax combination and start low and work up. As long as you follow the guide and observe the flash point you will get beautifully scented candles with a bit of practise. All fragrance oils have what is referred to as a Flash Point — the temperature at which the oil will start to combust and the fragrance is released.
